Mountain Biker moving to Kansas?

I am a dedicated mountain biker who is moving to McPherson KS, which is an hour north of Wichita. I have a full suspension Mountain Bike and a road bike, and have two questions. First, what nearby Mountain Biking is available in that area, and second, what kind of bike is best suited for the area? Hardtail 29er? Single Speed? Or should I just buy a cross bike and ride dirt roads?
To clarify - I work in a bike shop now, but wont be when I move to Kansas. I would like to get the employe discount while I am still here.

What is better Carbon Frame, ALum, hard tail etc,,, My budget for Mountain Bike is 5,000 an a road bike 1,300 Bike store people don't explain much, I would like a full suspension bike but the one they showed me for 5,000 wasn't so then they showed me another , i don't know what is better, an what the heck does 29R mean vs a 26??????

The lighter the bike the better. The materials you refer to carbon, aluminum etc. All have riding characteristics too. Carbon bikes are for high end bikes for racing. Aluminum is throughout the bicycle industry. Aluminum is a strong metal and inherently light, providing the benefits of steel without the calories so to speak. However, carbon and aluminum cannot be repaired. Once bent or broken the bike is trashed. Steel can be as light as aluminum if the overall density is thinner than usual. If steel is bent its not broken. If you want to make adaptations to steel it can be bent when heated, while aluminum's characteristics are brittle. People like carbon bikes for racing because in a few pedals a rider is at light speed. Aluminum is appreciated because its more affordable and its lightweight lends itself to really good time trials. For the lay person aluminum has a bumpy ride, on the other hand steel has a smooth warm ride.

Ride the bikes this will reduce confusion. A hard tail means a bike without a rear suspension. As far as choosing between Fisher and Cannondale? You can't go wrong.

Recalling the Mt. Fuji Mountain Race

During my lengthy stay here on Okinawa, I have enjoyed participating in several endurance sporting events. You only live once, right? I've completed 26.2-mile marathons in exotic places like Bali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Hawaii. I've biked 330 kilometers (206 miles) in the 2-day non-competitive Tour de Okinawa. I've also been able to finish the Izena 88 Triathlon twice (2K swim/ 66K bike/ 20K run).

Although I've been told many times that I cannot leave Japan without climbing Mt. Fuji, this was another adventure that never really sparked my interest. Why would I want to climb Mt. Fuji? Everybody does that. Then one day I came across information about a 1/2 marathon Mt. Fuji Mountain Race. Perfect. Let's do it! .

According to the race website, the 21 kilometer race to the summit starts in Fujiyoshida and climbs a total of 9,770 feet, finishing at the summit, 12,388 feet above sea level. Challenging, but something I hoped that I could manage.

It's been 3 years since I entered this race, but as I recall the first 5 miles weren't too bad. Well shaded on a nice trail, with the exception of the first kilometer, all uphill. I remember thinking just set the treadmill at an 8% or 10% incline for a few miles and you'll get the idea what this is like. The stretch between 5 and 10 miles proved a bit more challenging, with some short little climbs over steps and rocks. No big deal.

My time at Station 6 (10 miles give or take) was 1 hr 57 minutes, and little did I know that the fun part of the course was still ahead. At that point all running was replaced by slow, steady, uphill, never ending climbing/walking. The pace wasn't bad, but I kept looking up, where as far as I could see was a winding trail of people disappearing into the clouds. People that I had no hope of catching.

Below me was a similar image, only they were passing me one by one. I was supposed to be in a race, yet here I was falling farther and farther behind.

With the idea of racing all but over, I focused on reaching that still invisible summit, chatting with hikers carrying their precious walking sticks along the way. Forgetting place and time, I just wanted to get this one over with.

Finally, right at 4 hours, I crossed the finish line! I was happy to beat the 4 hr 30 minute cut-off with a half hour to spare, but then it hit me that I still had to get down. That took another 2 hours.

Was it worth it? I'll remember this race for the rest of my life, so I guess so. Could I have done better? Sure, if I'd done a lot more uphill running and Stairmaster training. It was harder than I'd imagined, but not as painful as running a full marathon. Will I go back? You know what they say about Mt. Fuji. "One who never climbs Mt. Fuji is a fool, and one who climbs it twice is twice the fool." That bit of wisdom certainly applies to the Mt. Fuji Mountain Race.

This year, the 59th running of the Mt. Fuji Mountain Race will be July 28th.

Does a Big Guy 6'2" 210lbs need a 29 Inch Wheel Mountain Bike?

I was looking to buy a new mountain bike. I've riden a 26" for years, but the other day at my LBS, one of the guys mentioned that I would greatly benefit from a 29er, and that it is meant for big guys. I'm not that big, tall i guess, but what do you all think?

Quit thinking that wheel size has anything to do with your height. Bikes from real bike shops are measured by frame size and will fit anyone from roughly 5' tall to 6' 6" tall. The only real reason to buy a 29'er bike is for off-road riding. Are you riding off-road or on the road or a combo of both?

I would like for you to look at the photos on the links below. Both bikes have 26" wheels. 1st bike is a 2001 Gary Fisher Tarpon I got for my son at 4' 11" tall, with a small 13" frame size. As he grew (FAST) I got him a 2004 Tarpon with an 18" frame size. See the difference in the seat height?

At 6' 2" tall, you would need about a 21 or 22" frame size in a mountain bike with 26" wheels. Same for a hybrid. In a road bike, somewhere around a 58 to 60cm frame. See 3rd link below. Go see a real bike shop for your needs.

BRAND NEW 2005 Fuji Tahoe?

I found this 2005 Fuji Tahoe in my local bike shop. new $ 649. holding the lock front and everything and is a hrdtail. I was looking on the internet and found for $ 1050. It is a decent model, not bad for the price. It may be the model of last year or something and the dealer tries to clear space for new models. I'd say get it, but to ensure it is right and you feel very comfortable in front of the purchase. And the lifetime tune-ups, certainly can not Top That! Very few boats offering (only one I can think of is the cyclist connection in Ohio). Get it checked and go have fun.

Which bike frame is better?

i understand that these two frames are pretty much alike. But it seems like the bottom tubes are different. Is the frame on the windsor cliff 29er pro of bikesdirect.com better or the fuji tahoe pro 29er frame better. Which one is stronger. The fuji one seems to have it larger at the top but smaller at the bottom. While the Windsor seems to have one continuous tube. With some reinforcements at the tops. I don't care about spec wise or price wise cause I already bought the windsor. I just want you to tell me why which one is better. Also, I' don't care about branding or paint job.

The windsor 29er is a great bike. Its got strong trustable compontents from sram and co. Such as rock shox reba 29sl air, and avid juicy 7 hydrolic brakes which are some of the best you can buy. all of the components are sram:front and rear deralliur and shifter. for 979 this is a steal. considering the rock shox is about 450$ alone, and the juicy 5s for rotor, brake, and lever are 200$. and the sram components probably add up to more than 250. Your getting a high quality bike for a low price. 670 is a great price. these sram parts should keep your bike running for a while. The frame itself seems very sturdy, as the width should not be something to worry about, considering even Specialized p.1s are this thin. The rims and tires are also very good quality and should be fine for off roading, the wtb speeddisc 29r holds up well, altough after a while i would sugguest switching to sun rims. The tires are maxxis and are known to be great for off road. if you need to upgrade any parts i would use http://chainreactioncycles.com
